This paper provides foundation studies for Teacher Education, Social Sciences, Arts and students in other academic disciplines in critical issues related to Māori education. It examines historical and contemporary approaches in Maori education provision in Aotearoa New Zealand. It explores policies, practices and developments that have impacted on the educational development of Maori.The paper will also examine the relevance of Te Tiriti o Waitangi/The Treaty of Waitangi for Māori experiences within the New Zealand education and schooling system.

This is a Moodle based course taught online. Students should expect to spend about 6 hours per week on this paper in the following proportions.

Online panopto lecture 1 hour

  • Analyse and interpret critically the history of New Zealand schooling and education and its particular impact on Māori

In order to be eligible for a pass in this paper students are required:

  • To complete all four assessment tasks
  • To participate in weekly Moodle discussions focused on content and readings
